About this class

Perform has been running at Rottingdean Public Hall every Thursday during term time since January 2013. The 4–7s class runs from 4pm to 5pm, with the 7–12s following straight after from 5:05pm to 6:05pm. Teacher David leads the sessions; Producer Amy handles the local organisation and communication. Area Partner Oliver makes regular visits to the class. The current summer term runs from 16th April to 16th July, with no session on Thursday 28th May.

Each hour brings drama, dance and singing into a single class rather than splitting them into separate lessons. For the younger group that means rapid-reaction games, yoga-inspired mirroring exercises, specially composed songs and tongue-twisters, and storytelling improvisations — all structured around what Perform calls the 4 Cs: Confidence, Concentration, Communication and Coordination. This summer the 4–7s theme is Mermaids & Pirates, following children on a story that changes week by week. The 7–12s work through acting and improvisation, movement and dance that builds towards more technical coordination work, and speech and singing where small group sizes mean most children get a solo or featured role. Their summer theme, The Dream, retells A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Class sizes are capped at 22, with two Perform staff in the room throughout. Perform uses a rolling curriculum, so there is no need to wait for a new term — a child can join at any point and follow a coherent programme from the first session. Parents receive a weekly email from Amy outlining that week's focus, and a personalised feedback form written by Amy and signed by Perform principal Lucy Quick.

General guidance: no prior performing arts experience is needed to join these classes.

Common questions

Can we try a session before signing up?

Yes — every child is entitled to a free trial class. You can book online, through Producer Amy directly, or by phone. There is no obligation to continue afterwards.

How are classes booked and paid for?

Classes are purchased in blocks of 10 or 20 sessions. You can also renew to the end of term at a slightly higher per-class rate, or set up a monthly Direct Debit. A bursary scheme is available, and Perform accepts childcare vouchers — call the office for details on either. New customers who join the mailing list receive £30 off their first block of 10 classes. Perform does not offer refunds, but sessions cancelled with at least three days' notice generate credit that transfers to your account and can be used on other Perform products.

Which group is right for my child's age?

The Thursday 4pm class is for children aged 4–7; the 5:05pm class is for 7–12s. In the younger group a mixed age range is deliberate — younger children are stretched and stimulated by those around them, while older children build confidence by taking the lead. For the 7–12s, character and social readiness matter more than exact age, so if your child is on the boundary it is worth speaking to Producer Amy before booking.

What actually happens in a session?

Every class covers drama, dance and singing within the same hour — there are no separate specialist lessons. The 4–7s move through physical games and movement, songs and tongue-twisters, and then character and storytelling work. The 7–12s work on acting and improvisation, coordinated movement and dance, and speech and singing where most children get a solo or featured role. The focus shifts each week, and each term has its own theme — this summer it is Mermaids & Pirates for 4–7s and The Dream for 7–12s.

What if we miss a session?

Missed classes cannot be added to the end of a block. Perform does operate a make-up system, however: your child can attend a session at a different venue, subject to availability, as long as they are still enrolled at Perform.
