About this class

Perform has been running Saturday classes at St Wilfrids Centenary Hall since September 2014. Two sessions run back-to-back: 4–7s from 9:30am to 11am, 7–12s from 11:15am to 12:45pm. David leads the sessions alongside teacher Amy, with Area Partner Jade overseeing the venue. The current summer term runs from 11 April to 18 July.

Each 90-minute class covers drama, dance and singing in a single session built around what Perform calls The 4 Cs: Confidence, Concentration, Communication and Coordination. For the younger group this summer, the theme is Mermaids & Pirates — children set sail on the good ship the Jammy Dodger across three sections: movement and coordination (dances, rapid-reaction games and yoga-inspired exercises), voice and song (specially composed songs, tongue-twisters and raps), and character and storytelling (role-play, improvisation and imagination exercises). The 7–12s are working on The Dream, a retelling of A Midsummer Night's Dream, with acting and improvisation, movement and dance, and speech and singing sections that build vocal projection and presence. Every week brings a different focus within the term's theme.

Class sizes are capped at 22 children and every session has two Perform staff members in the room. Because Perform runs a rolling curriculum, children can join at any point rather than waiting for a fresh term to begin. Parents receive a personalised Feedback Form — written by the Producer and signed by Principal Lucy Quick — and a weekly email from the Producer setting out that week's focus.

Common questions

Can my child try a session before signing up?

Yes. Every child is entitled to a free trial class. Book online via the Perform website, through David or Amy directly, or by phone.

What ages do the classes cover?

Two classes: 4–7s (Saturdays 9:30am–11am) and 7–12s (Saturdays 11:15am–12:45pm). Mixed ages within the 4–7s group are deliberate — younger children are stretched by the group dynamic while older children gain early leadership skills. In the 7–12s class, previous experience and character count for more than exact age.

What actually happens in a session?

Each class splits into three sections covering movement (coordination, balance and games), voice and song (specially composed songs, raps and tongue-twisters), and drama (improvisation, storytelling and character work). Each week has a different focus within the term's theme. Three times a year, families are invited to half-termly Open Workshops and end-of-term Presentations to see what their children have been working on.

How does booking work?

Classes are purchased in blocks of 10 or 20 consecutive sessions. You can also renew to the end of term or pay monthly by Direct Debit. Perform does not offer refunds, but cancellations with three days' notice generate credit that carries over to your account for other Perform products. If a child rejoins after cancelling, a minimum of 10 consecutive classes must be purchased. A bursary scheme is available, and Perform accepts childcare vouchers. New customers who join the mailing list receive £30 off their first block of 10 classes.

Are holiday courses available?

Yes. During school holidays, Perform runs themed courses based on Peter Pan, available for children aged 4–10 in three, four or five-day options. These run separately from the weekly term-time sessions and include mini-performances.
