Friday mornings at St Andrews Church Hall bring together parents and babies from across Shoeburyness for a structured hour of research-backed sensory play. The class is part of Baby Sensory Southend, run by Louise Wiseman — who is approaching a decade of delivering sessions across Rochford, Westcliff, Leigh, and Shoeburyness. That kind of continuity matters: you are joining a practitioner who knows the local families and has guided babies through the full 0–13 month programme many times over.

Every session follows a detailed lesson plan written by Dr Lin Day, the programme's founder, whose research into early child development spans more than four decades. In practice that means each Friday works around a different theme. You might encounter light play with visual props — arranged at precisely the distance a young baby can focus — textured objects to explore, massage and movement sequences that include tummy time, or sensory activities involving scent and sound. Songs run through each session: a mix of original material and familiar rhymes chosen to support early speech and language. The room ends quietly each time, with sounds that mimic the womb to bring a calm close to the hour.

The programme is deliberately designed for parents as much as for babies. Every activity is explained with enough practical context to repeat it at home, so the class builds a library of things to try through the rest of the week. Babies are welcome to feed or have a cuddle at any point — no pressure, no performance. Parents often find that a weekly class becomes an anchor: a reliable reason to get out, and a room full of people who know exactly what this stage of life feels like.
