Baby Sensory

Every Thursday morning and lunchtime, the main hall at Greenhill Methodist Church in Sheffield's S8 fills with the sounds and textures of a Baby Sensory session for ages from birth to 13 months to thirteen months. Baby Sensory Sheffield — run locally by Helen Claye and Sarah Herrett — offers three timed slots so you can join the group that fits your baby's stage: older babies (6–13 months) start at 09:30, a mixed-ages class (0–13 months) follows at 11:00, and younger babies (0–6 months) close out at 12:30. All slots run for a full hour, all term time only.

Each session follows a structure grounded in Dr Lin Day's decades of research: a play-rest-play rhythm that works with, rather than against, a baby's natural pace. You might move through massage, tummy time and movement sequences, then settle into quieter exploratory play — textures, scents, and visuals arranged at exactly the distance a young baby focuses best. Music is woven throughout, drawing on original songs composed by Dr Day (including 'Say Hello to the Sun' and 'Wave Goodbye') alongside traditional rhymes chosen to build early speech. The instruments have been measured for decibel level so nothing is uncomfortably loud for small ears, and every session closes with womb-sound relaxation to gently bring things down. Sensory signing — a strand of every class — introduces babies to simple communicative gestures before words arrive.

The programme draws on 40 core lesson plans plus 28 seasonal and special event sessions, so the content shifts week to week. Babies with physical or sensory differences are fully included; activities are adapted as needed. You're welcome to feed or settle your baby at any point — there's no pressure to hold a rigid structure.
