About this class

Each Tuesday at Beggarwood Community Centre, Producer Gemma and Teacher Grace run two back-to-back 4-7s sessions: one starting at 4:00pm and another at 5:05pm, each an hour long. The current summer term runs from 14th April to 14th July 2026, with no session on Tuesday 26th May. This term's theme is Mermaids & Pirates — children set sail on the Jammy Dodger to meet the Seasick Pirate, singing parrot Rita Conchita and a mermaid on a mission, all on a quest to find the Sacred Coconut.

Every session is divided into three sections designed specifically for this age group. It opens with Move & Feel: dances, rapid-reaction games and yoga-inspired mirroring exercises that develop coordination, balance and core stability. The middle section, Listen, Speak & Sing, uses specially composed songs, tongue-twisters and raps to build verbal confidence and listening skills. The session closes with Create & Imagine, where character explorations, storytelling and role-play develop concentration and imagination. Class size is capped at 22 children, with two Perform staff members present throughout.

Parents do not sit in during weekly sessions — children generally get more from the class on their own — but the structure keeps you well informed. After every class, Gemma sends a weekly email covering what the session focused on. Personalised Feedback Forms, written by the Producer and signed by Perform's Principal Lucy Quick, give a detailed breakdown of each child's progress across all three parts of the class. Gemma is always available to answer questions or discuss your child's development.

Common questions

Can my child try a session before committing?

Yes. Every child gets one free trial session. Book it in advance — online or by phone — and it must be scheduled within the next two weeks of term-time. Before attending, you will need to complete and sign a registration form with contact, identification and health details.

What does my child need to wear?

The Perform T-shirt for their class must be purchased and worn to every session. Perform reserves the right to refuse admission without refund if a child arrives without it.

Will I get to see what they're learning?

Three times a year, parents are invited in. Half-term Open Workshops let you watch the session; end-of-term Presentations feature the dancing, acting and singing the children have been working on. After every class, Gemma sends a weekly email covering that week's focus, and personalised written Feedback Forms — covering all three parts of the session — are signed off by Principal Lucy Quick.

What happens if my child misses a session?

Missed sessions cannot be added to the end of a block. If you notify Perform by telephone by 11:00am on the day, a make-up session at another Perform class can be arranged, provided your child still has at least one untaken session remaining at this school.

How are sessions booked?

Classes are booked in blocks of 10 (or 20) consecutive weekly sessions, with full payment due by the end of the first session. Around three weeks before the final session, Perform emails to confirm automatic renewal for another 10; you have 14 days from that notification to cancel if you choose not to continue. New customers can get £30 off a first block of 10 by signing up to the mailing list. Payment options include monthly Direct Debit, childcare vouchers and a bursary scheme.
