About this class

Perform has been running weekly drama classes at St Andrew's Church Hall in Archway since September 2012, every Wednesday during term-time. The current term runs from 15th April to 15th July — with no session on Wednesday 27th May — and this summer the 4-7s are sailing aboard the Jammy Dodger in Mermaids & Pirates: a swashbuckling story involving the Seasick Pirate, a singing parrot called Rita Conchita and a mermaid on a quest to find the Sacred Coconut. Classes are run by Callum and Lauren, with regular visits from Area Partner Gemma.

Each one-hour session is structured in three distinct parts, shaped around what Perform calls the 4 Cs: Confidence, Communication, Concentration and Coordination. It opens with Move & Feel — dances, rapid reaction games and yoga-inspired mirroring exercises that build physical coordination, balance and core stability. The middle section, Listen, Speak & Sing, uses specially composed songs, tongue-twisters and raps to stretch children's verbal communication and listening skills; the material tends to feel more like play than practice. The session closes with Create & Imagine, in which children work through character explorations, storytelling and role-playing improvisations. Each week carries a different focus, so there is always something new to engage with.

Parents do not attend weekly sessions — children benefit most without parents present — but families are invited in at three points in the year: half-term Open Workshops and an end-of-term Presentation featuring dancing, acting and singing. After every class the Producer sends a weekly email summarising the session's focus and the skills the group explored. Personalised Feedback Forms, written by the Producer and signed off by Perform's Principal Lucy Quick, arrive regularly throughout the term. Callum or Lauren is available at any point to discuss your child's progress.

Common questions

Can we try a session before committing?

Yes — every child is entitled to one free trial session. Book it in advance (online or by phone), and at the time of booking it must be scheduled to take place within the next two weeks of term-time. Before the trial, a registration form covering contact, identification and health details needs to be completed and signed.

What does my child need to wear?

The Perform T-shirt for their class must be purchased and worn to every session. Perform reserves the right to refuse admission if it is not worn.

What happens at the end of term?

Three times a year families are invited in: half-term Open Workshops let parents see what their child has been learning, and end-of-term Presentations are a chance to watch a show featuring dancing, acting and singing. This summer there is also a West End show — Mermaids & Pirates — for which tickets can be booked separately.

What if my child misses a session?

Missed sessions cannot be added to the end of a block under any circumstances. If you call Perform before 11:00am on the day, you can arrange a make-up session at a different class, provided at least one untaken session remains at the original school.

How are classes booked and what are the payment options?

Classes are booked in blocks of 10 (or 20) consecutive weekly sessions, with full payment due by the end of the first session. Flexible options include monthly Direct Debit, renewal to the end of term, and childcare vouchers. A bursary scheme is also available. New customers can receive £30 off their first block of 10 by signing up to the Perform mailing list. Refunds are not offered for weekly workshop sessions; cancellations require at least 3 working days' notice given directly to the Perform office by telephone.
