About this class

Perform's weekly drama classes for 4-7s take place at St George's Church Hall on Albermarle Road, Beckenham — a Saturday fixture with two slots available, 9:30–11:00am and 11:15am–12:45pm. The current term runs from 11th April to 18th July, with classes running every Saturday throughout. Producer Jessalyn leads each session alongside teacher Peter.

Each 90-minute session is divided into three sections designed specifically for this age group. The first, Move & Feel, brings together dances, rapid-reaction games and yoga-inspired mirroring exercises to develop physical coordination, balance and emotional awareness through movement and music. Listen, Speak & Sing follows, with specially composed songs, tongue-twisters and raps that build verbal communication, listening skills and concentration. The session closes with Create & Imagine: character explorations, storytelling and role-playing improvisations that develop concentration, imagination and speaking skills. Every activity is designed around what Perform calls the 4 Cs — Confidence, Communication, Concentration and Coordination.

This summer term the theme for 4-7s is Mermaids & Pirates. Children set sail on the good ship the Jammy Dodger, meet the notorious Seasick Pirate and singing parrot Rita Conchita, and join a mermaid on a mission on a quest to find the Sacred Coconut. The storyline gives each week's activities a shared backdrop that changes and develops as the term progresses. Classes are capped at 22 children with two Perform staff members present at all times, and after each session parents receive a weekly email from the Producer detailing what that week's focus has been and what skills the class explored.

Common questions

Can my child try a class before committing?

Yes. Every child is entitled to one free trial session. Book it in advance — by phone or online — and the session must be scheduled to take place within the next two weeks of term-time. Before attending, a registration form covering contact, identification and health details must be completed and signed.

What does my child need to wear?

A Perform T-shirt is required at every session. It must be purchased before your child first attends. Perform reserves the right to refuse admission to any child not wearing the correct T-shirt, and no refund is given in that situation.

How are classes booked and paid for?

Classes are booked in blocks of 10 consecutive weekly sessions, with full payment due by the end of the first session. Flexible options include monthly Direct Debit, renewal to the end of term (at a slightly higher per-class rate), and childcare vouchers. A bursary scheme is also available. New customers joining the mailing list receive £30 off their first block of 10. Around three weeks before a child's final session, Perform emails to confirm automatic renewal for a further 10 sessions; you have 14 days from that notification to cancel.

What happens if we miss a Saturday?

Missed sessions cannot be added to the end of a block under any circumstances. However, if you notify Perform by phone before 11:00am on the day you want a make-up, your child can attend a session at another Perform class — provided at least one untaken session at St George's remains on the account.

Will I see what my child is working on?

Day-to-day weekly sessions are drop-off: children benefit most when parents are not in the room. Three times a year, though, family and friends are invited in — half-term Open Workshops let you watch what the class has been learning, and end-of-term Presentations are a short show of dancing, acting and singing. The Producer is always available after class to discuss your child's progress, and parents also receive regular personalised Feedback Forms covering each of the three sections of the programme; every form is read and signed by Perform's Principal, Lucy Quick.
