About this class

Perform has been running at Chestnut Lane since October 2015. The current term goes from 16 April to 16 July, with one gap: there are no sessions on Thursday 28 May.

4–7s (Thursdays 4pm–5pm)

This term the 4–7s are deep in Mermaids & Pirates, sailing on the Jammy Dodger in search of the Sacred Coconut alongside the notorious Seasick Pirate and singing parrot Rita Conchita. Each one-hour session is built around three sections. It opens with Move & Feel — dances, rapid-reaction games and yoga-inspired mirroring exercises that develop coordination, balance and core stability. The middle third, Listen, Speak & Sing, introduces specially composed songs, tongue-twisters and raps to sharpen verbal communication and build confidence. The final section, Create & Imagine, uses character explorations, storytelling and role-play to stretch imagination and speaking skills. Perform weaves four core areas into every activity: Confidence, Communication, Concentration and Coordination.

7–12s (Thursdays 5:05pm–6:05pm)

Older children work through The Dream this summer — Perform's reworking of A Midsummer Night's Dream, putting Oberon, Titania, footballers, popstars and celebrities centre stage. Sessions open with Dance & Movement, progressing from energetic group warm-ups to choreographed routines and technical notes on physical skills. Speaking & Singing follows, building vocal flexibility, articulation and projection, with small enough groups that most children can take a solo or featured role if they want one. The session closes with Drama & Improvisation: drama-based games covering focus work, character communication and vocal projection, moving on to detailed work on character, physicality and accents.

Both classes

Class size is capped at 22 children with two Perform staff members present every session. At Chestnut Lane the teacher is Lucy and the Producer is Catherine. Parents don't sit in during weekly sessions — children tend to get more from the class that way — but after every session Catherine sends a weekly email summarising what the group worked on. Personalised written Feedback Forms arrive throughout the term, each one read and signed by Perform's Principal, Lucy Quick. The Producer is always available to talk through any questions about your child's progress.

Common questions

Can my child try the class before committing?

Yes. Every child is entitled to one free trial session. Book it in advance — by phone or online — and the session must be scheduled within the next two weeks of term-time. Before attending, you'll be asked to complete and sign a registration form with contact, identification and health details.

What does my child need to wear?

Children must wear the relevant Perform T-shirt to every session. Perform reserves the right to refuse admission without refund if the T-shirt is not worn.

How are sessions booked and paid for?

Classes are booked in blocks of 10 consecutive weekly sessions. Full payment (minus any agreed discounts) is due by the end of the first session. Flexible options include monthly Direct Debit, renewing to the end of term at a slightly higher rate per class, and childcare vouchers. A bursary scheme is also available, and new customers can receive £30 off a first block of 10 classes by signing up to the Perform mailing list.

What happens at the end of a block?

Around three weeks before your child's final session, Perform emails to confirm automatic renewal for another 10 sessions. You have 14 days from that notification to cancel if you do not want to continue.

What if my child misses a session?

Missed sessions cannot be added to the end of a block. You can arrange a make-up session at a different Perform class, but you must notify the Perform office by phone before 11am on the day you want your child to attend, and your child must still have at least one untaken session remaining at Chestnut Lane at that point.

Do parents get to see what the children are working on?

Three times a year, family and friends are invited to half-term Open Workshops and end-of-term Presentations, where children perform dancing, acting and singing. This summer Perform is also staging a West End show — Mermaids & Pirates — for which tickets can be booked separately.
